The Economist has a story titled Meritocracy in America that asks "Whatever happened to the belief that any American could get to the top?"
This is a central issue for me, since it's been a real focus for me, a dream in many ways, to help capable workers to climb their way out of dead-end careers and into software development. swdev.org is an artifact of that effort. Time, the CallPrint Fiasco and changing demand in software has deeply discouraged those dreams. The Economist Story taps some of the issues surrounding our loss of a true Meritocracy. Give it a read!
